Aboyne Duathlon - 2nd April 2006

During a recent fit of madness Lynda and I decided it would be good fun to enter the Aboyne Duathlon, organised by the Fleet Feet triathletes. The event was billed as being a good beginners duathlon, consisting of a 5km run, 30km cycle, and then another 5km run.

When we turned up at the registration we were quite disturbed to see a lot of very fit, very professional looking people, with expensive equipment, and who were clearly taking it seriously. As beginners we both started in the first heat, 20 minutes ahead of the proper athletes. The first 5km run was ok, with the course being very flat. Having finished the run relatively high up the field, I managed to get overtaken by a lot of people in the transition zone, changing from running to cycling. A lot of the faster people just cycled in their running shoes, which saved them a lot of time at the changeovers. The 30km cycle consisted of 2 laps of a predominantly flat course. The route headed out the North Deeside Road to Dinnet, crossed the Dee, and then came back in the South Deeside road, to Aboyne. No drafting was allowed during the race, so any chatting with fellow competitors was out the window.

The cycle went well, and I managed to make up a few places on people who had overtaken me at the transition, before getting into a battle with a fellow competitor, which I just won towards the end of the second lap.

The second run was the bit I was least looking forward to. I got off the bike, got changed, and preceded to very slowly jog round the 5km. I got overtaken by a number of the competitors from the second heat, who were going for the overall win, but managed to hold my position in relation to the people who started in my heat.

I eventually crossed the line in a time of 1 hour 49 minutes, putting me 27 minutes behind the overall winner. Lynda finished in 2 hours, 10 minutes, which included a storming bike ride, on her commuter mountain bike, with knobbly tyres.

Overall, an enjoyable event, looking back on it, but I was definitely not thinking that at the time.
