To Do
In July 2004 myself, David and Lynda took part in the Corriyairack Pass Challenge; a 43 mile team mountain bike race to raise money for the Badaguish outdoors centre. As a team we finished a very creditable 5th in the mixed team event but in reality we were just happy to complete the course due to the terrible weather.
The race started in Fort Augustus but our woes started before then, on the bus to the start. I nearly lost my breakfast due to travel sickness and the public toilets in Fort Augustus couldn't come too soon for David.
A delay in the bikes arriving allowed us to gather ourselves for the start. The first 17 miles of the event were offroad on General Wade's road over the Corrieyairack Pass. The first 10 of these miles were uphill from virtually sea level to 2500 feet. There then followed a boulder strewn 7 mile descent to Garva Birdge. The second half of the race consisted of a fairly flat 26 miles road ride to Kincraig.
The early sections were frustrating as the shear numbers of cyclists on the path made it hard to find a rhythm. The congestion soon thinned as we all found our own pace. It was around this point that Lynda started complaining that me and David were chatting too cheerfully bearing in mind the severity of the slope. We were just trying to enjoy ourselves.
Around about the same time that I commented that the views were stunning and that the weather wasn't too bad the cloud level dropped and it started raining. The second half of the climb was conducted in zero visability and freezing rain.
None the less we summitted safely and immediately set off on the manic switch backs which were also doubling for a raging torrent of water. Eventually the steepness of the hill and water became too much for our brakes and we ended up pushing over some of the lower very rocky sections.
At Garva Bridge we refuelled energy levels with delicious Marky's fudge bars before the long road slog. Some of the (not very big) hills nearly finished us but we made it safely to Kincraig narrowly pipping another team for 5th place.
