Arrochar Peninsula Loop

Arrochar is located in the West of Scotland near to Loch Lomond and just North of Helensburgh. It is on the edge of the Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

Although this loop is mainly on fire roads it is well worth it for the excellent section of singletrack across Duke’s Pass and the following descent to Loch Goil.

The route is well signposted by the forestry commission, who constructed the link across Duke’s Pass. There are several possible start points; Ardgartan, where we parked, is the easiest to get to. The route is definitely best tackled in a clockwise direction to enjoy the downhill from Clach Bheinn to Loch Goil. The climb to the Rest and Be Thankful is pretty grim from either direction.

If starting from Ardgartan, Lochgoilhead makes a superb stop for lunch. It has a small shop and a pub but not much else.

If you’re mega fit you could do this loop in 3 hours. We did it in a more realistic 4-5 allowing for stops for punctures, lunch and generally looking at the stunning views.

Another excellent ride from Ardgarten is to head north through the forest above Arrochar along the land rover track in Glen Loin as far as the dam at Loch Sloy. The return to Arrochar is along the singletrack at the bottom of Glen Loin. This path is wonderfully steep and technical in places.
