Big River

Bandit Country

An old gold mine

From the charming, quiet (non-touristy) town of Reefton, this ride climbs up to the Big River Road to an abandoned gold mining town.

After spinning out of town the climb started on a gravel road for 10 easy kms, after which the Big River Road started properly. 15km of climbing on a rough rocky 4WD track past old mine works took me to the Big River itself. As the forest cleared the track crossed the icy water 4 times before the final push up to the excellent DOC hut. This looked like a great place to stay and explore the many local trails especially the Waiuta Track.

No time for this today so returned the way I came on the bone shaking descent gaining the reward for all that hard work earlier in the day. With my rather chilly feet from wading across the river, and the inclement weather the first part of this was kind of cold. Predictably when I got down to Reefton the sun was shining.
