To Do
After parking at the start of Skippers Road I climbed first to Skippers Saddle and then onto a rough 4WD track to Mount Dewar. The gradient was just steep enough that pushing was always a tempting option. With tired legs and intermittent enthusiasm, especially after the previous day's epic Moke circuit I often succombed.
From the top I could see for miles; jagged snow topped mountains in the distance, the renarkable Remarkables, the lake all the way down at Queenstown and the nearby ski area at Coronet Peak. Best of all I could see the track nearly all the way down to the Shotover River, some 800 vertical metres below me.
A fast grassy section soon had my brakes warmed up for some more technical, rocky hairpins before finally arriving at the huts at the bottom.
From here a footpath, scarily similar to yesterday's, followed the hill above the river. My fears about getting lost again were allayed when the path proved to be clearer of sharp undergrowth and much more rideable with some very sweet descents. My progress was only slowed by the occasional land slip and rotting goat. If you think that goats smell bad when they're alive...
Back at Skippers Road it was 40 minutes of steady climbing back to the saddle. I resisted riding the Pack Track downhill track as it would've meant doing the long final climb all over again.
