Great Barrier Island

Medlands Beach. Sweet

Windy Canyon

Only 4 hours on the ferry from busy Auckland takes you to sleepy Great Barrier Island. The highlights here are volcanic activity, no electricity, few cars and lots of dirt roads and tracks to explore. I did a loop of the island in one long day but a much better option would be to take 2 days over the ride staying at the DOC hut at Port Fitzroy or the nearby backpackers. This would allow more time to explore the excellent side trips.

From Tryphea a steady 3km climb and speedy descent saw me cross to the east coast of the island at Medlands Beach; the first of many picture postcard, white sandy beaches. Shortly after Claris the tarmac ran out and the dirt track climbed to Windy Canyon only a short trek from Hirakimata (Mt Hobson 621m) the highest point on the island. Unfortunately I didn't have time for this side trip before descending on the loose gravel back to the coast. One more up and over took me to Port Fitzroy where I got some lunch.

From Port Fitzroy to Whangaparapara (easy for you to say) an old logging track is open to mountain bikes. This was 14km of rough, steep track with several fords through crystal clear streams and past huge kauri trees.

Shortly after rejoining the gravel road I left the bike and hiked for 30 minutes to some hot volcanic springs for relaxing bath. Great after a day of hard biking.

All that remained was an easy road spin, with one big climb, back to the south of the island.
