Mundaring 8

This 40 odd km figure of 8 route uses some of the best sections of singletrack on the Munda Biddi Trail combined with the Mundaring Loop. It is possible to start the route at Mundaring, Mundaring Weir or the Dell (as I did).

The golden pipeline

Typically fast and loose track on the Mundaring Loop

From the Dell (between Kalamunda and Mundaring Weir on the Mundaring Weir road) it is straight onto a great singletrack descent on the Munda Biddi Trail. This was as loose and skiddy as I have ridden it so lots of fun. When the trail meets the pipeline it flattens out. Sections of fire road alongside the pipe are mixed in with twisty singletrack.

I chose to bypass the offroad section past the Mudaring Weir Hotel, saving it for the descent. Instead I climbed on the road up to Jacoby Park before re-joining the Munda Biddi for a cruisey 8km ascent to the sculpture park at Mundaring. This is easily the highest point on the ride so all downhill from here. This downhill was on the Mundaring Loop, a (vaguely) signposted mtbike trail. Although the tracks here are wide they are steep, fast and rutted. A real nerve jangler.

Once back at Mundaring Weir I popped into the charming hotel for a cold drink before the ascent back up to the Dell.

This climb on the Munda Biddi has defeated me several times before and I was pleased to clean the lot today. Towards the top I turned off onto the alternative touring route, which is an easier climb and creates a second loop (the top of the 8).

At the very sandy junction of Forrest Road and some large overhead lines I turned left back onto the main Munda Biddi Trail for a final fast downhill blast back to the car to end a very satisfying midweek blast.
