Queen Charlotte Track

Much of my motivation for travelling to New Zealand was based around cycling the Queen Charlotte Track and I am pleased to say that it didn't disappoint. From the great water taxis that ferried me and my kit about to the superb continuous singletrack. Best of all though was those views.

Day 1 - Resolution Bay to Portage Bay (46.4 km)

Endeavour Inlet

Queen Charlotte Sound from Craglee

DOC deemed the first section of the trail from Ships Cove to be too muddy for mountain bikes so the water taxi dropped me at Resolution Bay. This saved a couple of ks, a steep hill but also some good views out to sea.

Initially the trail was steep and muddy but it dried out and flattened out around enchanting Endeavour Bay. From the Kenepuru Saddle the track improved in quality but also climbed steeply to the ridgeline. Twists, turns and undulations provided alternative stunning views of the Queen Charlotte Sound and the Kenepuru Sound. Plenty of good photo stops in the afternoon sunshine.

The fast, loose descent to Portage Bay was only broken by walkers. At Portage Bay I found my backpacker accommodation with my luggage waiting for me before comparing notes with walkers and refuelling.

Day 2 - Portage Bay to Picton (45.0 km)

Above Kenepuru Sound

This morning I was joined by Inglasi, a Spanish guy on his honeymoon whose wife had bailed out. Heavy overnight rain made the climb out of Portage Bay into a slippery push on slick clay. The lifting clouds added a some perspective to the distant mountains but I was soon concentrating on the trail on the switchbacked descent to Te Mahia. The track seemed to cling to the cliff side and I only prayed that I was going to too.

The final dozen kms to Anakiwa were on a smooth, fast and very muddy singletrack through native forest. To extend the ride a little, instead of taking the water taxi back to Picton, I pedalled out the 24km on the road. I regretted this as the mud started to dry and set on the bike and me renderring the gears just about useless.
